Question 1: Do you support a 2030 target of 45 per cent reduction in Edmonton greenhouse gas emissions from 2010 levels, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)?

Yes

Question 2: Which policies would you propose or support to reach the 45% greenhouse gas emission reduction target?

Giselle’s Response:
• Improving transit and making it more accessible to those across the City; in addition, improving our snow clearing strategy so residents feel comfortable walking short distances in winter, as opposed to driving because of icy conditions
• Promoting population growth in mature neighbourhoods (pro-infill vs. greenfield developments) in a higher-density manner beyond simply splitting lots)
• Incentives/subsidies for residents, businesses and community buildings to improve their buildings with more energy efficient/greener technologies (e.g. furnaces, solar panels, lighting, etc.);
• Regulations and incentives for developers to adjust their practices to help achieve these goals, ranging from materials, density of development, and building design
•
Promotion of local businesses/industry to lessen our footprint;

Question 3: Are there any areas of special interest to you that you feel could contribute significantly to reducing Edmonton’s carbon footprint?

Giselle’s Response:
The areas of special interest to me are as follows:

•  Improving public transit and walkability of our city to reduce carbon foot print from transportation
• Supporting businesses and industries that focus on either green energy, repurposing/ manufacturing recycling materials
• Promoting growth in mature neighbourhoods in a higher-density manner (ex. Row housing/ low-rise apartments as opposed to simply splitting lots)
• Providing incentives to companies to reduce or re-use waste generated in manufacturing
• Promoting a culture of repair, re-gifting, upcycling and re-using materials
• Protecting our River Valley system
• Monitoring the implementation of the Energy Transition Strategy in its entirety and identifying opportunities to go beyond the stipulated goals.
